Nightstand For My Lover

Fall 2021

Nightstand

This project is a reaction to the discarded inverse sheets of mdf leftover from artist, Joey Slaughter. Slaughter uses a CNC to cut intricate components for his 3-dimensional reliefs, leaving unusually shaped remnants in the 4’x8’ mdf sheets. What started as a 3 hour project turned into an entire week of evenings spent sanding and painting in order to achieve the smoothest finish possible. Like architecture, the creativity is in the response to the constraints at hand. I look at this piece as sculpture, but with function. The only function being the need to hold a lightweight item leaves the door wide open.
